Updating…

A lot of progress has been made on our new buildings. Here is a quick update.

The roofs are complete! The new roofs have the same diamond shingles as our shop/house.

Don’t mind that thing sticking out of the garage door…

The siding on the shed is done! We used a standard PBR profile with exposed fasteners. It looks real sleek.

The cats approve

We are leaving the wood interior as-is. We had it sprayed with fire-resistant intumescent paint. The clear paint also seals the wood. Luckily the paint dried before the cats discovered the playground of plastic masking.

The shed just needs a few outlets and some ceiling lights before we fill it with junk!

The garage is still a work in progress.

All of the garage doors are in. There are two big doors at each end.

Along the long side of the building, there two 12 foot doors and one 8 foot bike door.

The doors still need motors and seals, but at least they are functional.

All four windows are in too. We got a slightly cheaper version of our shop windows. They probably look the same to the undiscerning eye. They are pine with black aluminum cladding on the exterior.

The only remaining holes are for the man doors, which we should be picking up from the painter next week.

We got four of the exact same doors as the shop. This reminds me, I need to pick out door knobs and copy our bent key. Buster is too good at opening doors now, so we have to convert to traditional knobs.

He even learned how to turn the key if we leave it in. I don’t think the key can survive many more fatigue cycles.

The metal soffit panels are up! The panels are vented with little perforations.

The siding project hasn’t begun, but Sam just placed the order for everything! We chose a reveal panel profile that should match the shop, but the panels will be the same matte black color as the shed. It was a tedious undertaking to design and model everything. Sam spent hours on it. Buster helped measure around the big garage doors, but he didn’t have much input on the design. CAD isn’t his forte.

Designing the various trim parts was the most painful part, so Sam is thrilled to be done.

The plywood is currently covered in HydroGap housewrap, so it will be protected if the Fall rain arrives before the metal siding. It’s like Tyvek, but it has little bumps that create a gap between the surface and the back of the siding.

The electrical in the garage is complete! The project has so far consumed around 4000 feet of wire- 3000 feet of Romex alone!

We already picked out the ceiling lights, which we’ll hang after the drywall.

Sam also plumbed in a few compressed air lines. He chose not to deal with copper this time.

The garage will be insulated (the walls and ceiling)- hopefully next week. Once the walls are stuffed, we will have the walls and ceiling drywalled and painted!

If all goes well, both buildings will be completely finished before Thanksgiving! All of our vehicles will get to go inside before the mice stake out their winter homes.

Sam also buried the remaining sections of drain pipe! There wasn’t enough room behind the shed to get a machine in sideways, so Sam got creative.

We can put gravel down soon. No muddy boots this winter!

Sam officially started his company, Nighthawk LLC. He’s already been working for a full year, but now we have a registered business.

Buster and Smokey are still synchronized 90% of the time.

And baby Stults is half baked!
